Malcolm Malik: Redefining Art and Identity in Chicago’s Creative Landscape
Malcolm Malik is a Chicago-based artist whose creative journey has been deeply shaped by his upbringing on both the Southside of Chicago and in the South Suburbs of Park Forest. Raised in a two-parent household, his childhood was filled with adventure, exploration, and a deep sense of curiosity—all of which fuel his creativity today. Whether crafting leather goods, creating leather portraits, or working on cut-and-sew projects, Malcolm’s work is a reflection of his diverse artistic vision. He’s also expanding into interior design, continually pushing the boundaries of his craft.
With a degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Sociology from Eastern Illinois University, Malcolm’s academic background—particularly his interest in interpersonal communication and psychology—continues to shape his approach to art. His creative process is a dynamic blend of self-inspiration and external influences: his family, his community, nature, music, and the world around him.
In recent years, Malcolm has found himself reconnecting with his childhood influences in subtle but powerful ways. His love for people-watching, exploring new music, traveling, and diving into the cultural significance of food have all provided new perspectives on life and art. This evolving outlook is powerfully reflected in his latest collection, Grandad’s Garden, which honors his late grandfather, Frederick Miller. Inspired by a transformative lifestyle change, this collection celebrates the vibrant colors and textures of fruits and vegetables—bringing to life the deep cultural, political, and sensory significance of these essential foods. The collection not only reflects his personal growth but also marks a pivotal moment in Malcolm’s artistic path, one that radically redefined his connection to food, culture, and creativity.

For Malcolm, art has always been a life-changing force—one that offers liberation, challenges norms, and breaks through limitations. Creativity is his tool for pushing boundaries and redefining what is possible. It has not only allowed him to innovate but has also empowered him to teach and inspire others. Through his workshop, Malik’s Masterclass of Leatherwork, he shares his craft with students, teaching them how to create leather goods by hand while imparting valuable life skills that extend far beyond the craft itself.
Malcolm’s commitment to his "why" as an artist drives him to expand his reach, especially within community-based organizations. While his work has already had a meaningful impact on his local circle, he is now focused on extending his influence further, connecting with new communities and individuals who share his passion for creativity and empowerment.
Looking ahead, Malcolm remains dedicated to using his art as a platform for connection and change. His creative journey is just beginning, and with his passion for innovation and his drive to make a lasting impact, it’s clear that his work will continue to resonate far beyond the Southside of Chicago.
““When you zone out on something your working on, it’s creative, it’s imaginative, it’s restorative. Why wouldn’t it be prayer?”
